Frequently Asked Questions

1. When should I meet with a lactation consultant? You can meet with a lactation consultant at any point during your breastfeeding journey. Many families schedule a visit during pregnancy to prepare for breastfeeding, while others seek support after birth when they are experiencing challenges with feeding, milk supply, latch, or pumping.

2. What can a lactation consultant help me with? A lactation consultant can help with a wide range of breastfeeding and infant-feeding concerns, including painful latch, nipple pain, low or high milk supply, engorgement, pumping, bottle-feeding, feeding schedules, returning to work, and concerns about your baby’s weight gain or feeding patterns.

3. Do I need to be having problems with breastfeeding to schedule a consultation? Not at all! Lactation support isn’t only for when something goes wrong. Prenatal education, newborn feeding guidance, and personalized support can help you feel more confident and prepared from the beginning.

4. What happens during a lactation consultation? Your consultation will be personalized to your needs. We may discuss your health and breastfeeding history, observe a feeding, assess your baby’s latch and milk transfer, review pumping or feeding routines, and create an individualized plan to help you meet your feeding goals.

5. How soon after giving birth should I schedule a consultation? If you are experiencing pain, difficulty latching, concerns about milk supply, or difficulty feeding your baby, it’s best to reach out as soon as possible. However, there is no “too late” when it comes to getting breastfeeding support.

6. Can you help if I am exclusively pumping or combination feeding? Absolutely. Lactation support can be helpful whether you are exclusively breastfeeding, exclusively pumping, combination feeding, or using formula along with breast milk. Our goal is to support you in finding an approach that works for you and your baby.

7. Can you help me increase my milk supply?
Yes. If you’re concerned about your milk supply, we can evaluate your feeding and pumping routine, your baby’s feeding patterns, and other factors that may affect milk production. Together, we’ll develop a plan based on your individual situation and feeding goals.

8. Do you offer help with pumping and choosing a breast pump? Yes. A lactation consultant can help you learn how to use your breast pump effectively, troubleshoot pumping concerns, discuss flange fit, and develop a pumping routine that fits your lifestyle and goals.

 10. Is lactation support covered by insurance? Insurance coverage for lactation services varies depending on your insurance plan and provider. We recommend checking with your insurance company to understand your specific benefits. We can also provide information about payment options and receipts when applicable.
